Heart Scan: One way to know the score.
The good news is that heart attacks can be prevented if atherosclerosis if diagnosed and treated. And a quick, painless test called a calcium screening or CT Heart Scan can detect calcium in the coronary arteries before you experience symptoms - helping identify potential heart disease risk.
This test uses a powerful imaging tool called computed tomography (CT) to capture cross - sectional images of the heart, and special computer software designed to detect calcium and the degree of its density. The results are given as a score. As the amount of calcium identified in the coronary arteries increases, the score increases. While a high score doesn't necessarily mean you will have a heart attack, it does provide an absolute diagnosis of heart disease. This is valuable information your doctor can use in charting your care.
Who can benefit from this test?
People between the ages of 45 and 75, especially those with a family history of heart disease and other risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes and lack of regular exercise, may benefit from this test. Your doctor can use the information from the screening to decide if additional tests are necessary and how much you should change lifestyle habits, such as diet and exercise.
Your heart is in good hands
Specially trained professionals perform the test and explain all the details. Results are reviewed by a board-certified physician, and with your written consent, results will be sent to and discussed with your doctor.
The total picture of heart health
A CT Heart Scan alone won't prevent a heart attack. It is much more important to maintain a continuous relationship with a health care provider and work together on an individual approach to change behavior over time. A calcium score, along with conventional testing, risk factors and other indicators, presents an overall picture of your heart health.
What will I experience during the exam?
Having a CT Heart Scan is quiet, fast and painless. The scanning equipment is open and spacious and does not require you to be enclosed. It takes only a few moments to obtain the necessary images of your heart. Your entire visit will take less than thirty minutes.
Is there any special preparation necessary?
Preparation is minimal. We ask that you refrain from caffeine, exercise and allergy medications for four hours before your scheduled exam. And your appointment can be arranged at the most convenient time for you - early morning, lunch hour, early evening - just let us know what time your prefer.
How can I pay for my CT Heart Scan?
The Wisconsin Heart Hospital accepts credit cards, personal checks and cash.
